£2.53m HLF grant for Montgomery Canal restoration

CRT announced on 13th October that it had been awarded £2.53 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to further the Montgomery Canal restoration. The bid was submitted by the Canal & River Trust with support from the Montgomery Canal Partnership. The total value of the package is £4.2m with the balance coming from other bodies including the Society.

Work in scope includes channel restoration from Pryces Bridge to Crickheath, improvements to almost 4 miles of towpath between Welshpool and Llanymynech, restoring 12 historic structures and extension of the Aston nature reserves.

Restoration to Crickheath will extend navigation by 2 km from the current limit at Gronwen. The extension of the nature reserves will raise the limit on the number of boats using the canal.
