The Society's aims are twofold:
- to protect and enhance the historic Shropshire Union system
- to restore the Montgomery Canal to navigation
To fulfil those aims the Society holds regular work parties on the Montgomery Canal and the rest of the Shropshire Union system, and maintains an extensive fundraising programme.
The Society's volunteers have done a substantial amount of work towards restoring the Montgomery Canal to navigation, including the restoration of 10 locks. The focus for restoration work parties is now to extend the watered channel at the northern end of the Monty. At present, our volunteers are working from Bridge 84 to Bridge 85.
On the enhancement side, we have provided mooring rings at many sites on each of the canals, some sites include picnic tables and even barbecue stands.
We seek to include all users of the canals, from local residents out for a stroll to the long distance hiker, and many of the seats along the towpaths have been sourced through the Society. We will consider any facility which will improve the canal amenities.
By joining the Society, you can become part of a vibrant and active group and make a meaningful contribution to the wellbeing of our waterways.
