Shropshire Union Canal Society

The Shropshire Union Canal Society was formed in 1966 to protect, enhance and restore the canals of the historic Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company. We have been actively engaged in restoring the Montgomery Canal since 1969. The Society has also installed mooring rings and other facilities at 78 locations around the SU system.

We are currently working to restore the channel between Bridges 84 and 85 of the Montgomery Canal, part of the 2.75 miles of dry canal that separates the isolated part of the Montgomery from the national network.

If you would like to join our work, please see the Restoration page for more details. To join the Society, please see the Membership page.

The Society is a registered charity and a Limited Company.

HS2 Route – Have your say!

A new proposal for the route of HS2 close to the Middlewich branch has been put forward. This includes a large (4 km long) rolling stock depot, moved from its original location near Wigan. The proposal shows a number of road and rail embankments, some up to 25 metres (82 ft) high.

The area affected lies between the A534 Middlewich Road and the canal. It stretches from Wimboldsley, east of Church Minshull to north of Middlewich, crossing the canal on a substantial embankment just west of bridge 26. More information can be found by following links given on the Church Minshull website: http://www.villagearena.org/newsroom/hs2-north-crewe-rail-depot-in-wimboldsley.html

There is currently an open consultation on the proposals but there is not much time; it closes on March 9th. If you wish to make your views known you can do this by:
